New Emo // Night Language by Molly Shannon, Molly Shannon

Shared by Balam Acab on facebook, this album by Portland Oregon band Molly Shannon, Molly Shannon turned out to be interesting and a breath of fresh air.  The vocals seem right, and the instrumentation is apparently organic, like real instruments; reminds me of early Modest Mouse. "Everything made, produced, broken, replaced, repaired, recorded by msms over 8 strange years of pain & damage."
 Stay sad, my friends.

Something I found through Darla Records facebook page. Listen to "Weird Gravity." I think they're from Toronto. Reminds me of Sweet Trip.

DOWNLOAD: anothercountyheard's Psychedelic Ain't Trap Mixtape

The experience of listening to this music while tripping at the beach and the freshwater springs of the Florida panhandle is the inspiration for this mixtape. It's psychedelic, not in the nostalgic sense so often signified by that term, but in the best sense of the word -- music that mimics the effects of psychedelics, beautiful and blissful, but not without a touch of  poignancy. It hopefully captures the  spectrum of feelings experienced in that expanded state of awareness. The carefully selected tracks unite some of the very best early vaporwave with shoegaze and dreampop, in short it's pure anothercountyheard.

Download: Raking The Wind by Body Cheetah

Caught somewhere between indie rock and shoegaze-dream pop, with a dash of punk attitude thrown in, Body Cheetah has been on my radar since contributing a track to the 1st HANUS giveaway comp.  Body Cheetah is the recording project of James Kristofik, who also heads the interesting net-label WOOZY TRIBE. A recent spate of releases finds his sound gaining distinction and definition. Raking The Wind evinces real songwriting talent and a flair for dreamy textures and production, and is a release that grows in appeal with each listen. Sample the standout tracks, "Shone" and "Than You Should Know" and download for free. Check out his other releases on Bandcamp. You can read more about Body Cheetah here.

Download: Seabright // Forest Moon EP

photo Allison's Adventures
While many trends and memes with their short life spans have come and gone, Californian Justin Morales has been writing and performing his own beautiful DIY surf-gaze dream rock, sharpening and refining his sound but never wavering in his focus; sixties pop-rock infused with  trop, chillwave  and shoegaze influences. His latest is a really sweet listen and a free download--check it out!

F ∆ U X E's Oh Fuck Another Beat Tape EP

I fux with Fauxe, one of my favorites.  He is  a seriously under-rated and consistently inventive beatmaker, whose work spans witch-house, ambient, shoegaze, and in this case, instrumental hip-hop. The Oh Fuck Another Beat Tape EP is finds the Singapore based producer paying homage to Donuts  on a 'beat tape' that develops lots interesting beats and rhythms but never stagnates. The sampling mines some excellent unheard material. Grab the free download, and check out all of his music. I recommend it.

Tracks: Nirosta Steel "Love Is Back" and "HOUND DOG"

My obsession with Arthur Russell led me to Arthur's Landing and guitarist Steven Hall's solo project Nirosta Steel. Some of Arthur's magic seems to have rubbed off on Steven and his unclassifiable and non-conformist recordings. This material doesn't sit comfortably in any genre, or more accurately it spans many genres, as did Arthur Russell's. Here are two tracks that delight me; the shoe-gazey Echo Island remix of "Love Is Back" and the dubbed-out, totally trippy "HOUND DOG - C+W Mix". Both of these are slow-burners that evolve as the tracks develop, and you are not going to 'get it' from hearing the first minute---LET IT PLAY THROUGH.

I highly recommend following both Nirosta Steel and Arthur's Landing on Soundcloud; Hall is a prolific artist who is posting a lot of interesting tracks and remixes.

EP: Savage Sister & Lykanthea // sundrowned

sundrowned, a collab between Savage Sister and Lykanthea is everything it ought to be. It aims at the right target and hits dead-center bullseye. This is the kind of music  Memoryhouse might  have made if they hadn't gotten signed; perfect dream pop shoegaze. The EP a is a clear '10', and one of the best we're likely to hear this year.

This, the astonishing remixes they've made, and what I heard of their forthcoming Wild Sleep EP (February 28), Savage Sister has established itself as a major artist. Lykanthea is Lakshmi Ramgopal, an experimental solo musician, also based in Chicago.

"Savage Sister is a kewl-bear dream pop/shoegaze/dreamwave band based in Chicago, made up of Michael Tenzer, Chloe Lundgren and Caitlin Klask."

Premiere: NEED A NAME Ambient Mixtape

Need A Name's Dario Lupo is not only one of the most prolific and consistently excellent purveyors of spaced-out ambient electronic shoegaze, he is also an enthusiastic and knowledgeable fan of the genre, who promotes other artist's music as much as his own. He's been quietly growing the Need A Name brand since 2011, with last years' album release What You Were, What I've Become being named as one of our favorites of 2012, and gaining an impressive 10,000 Soundcloud followers and 13, 000+ likes on Facebook!

When Dario broached the idea of doing an all ambient mixtape, I was like, "Yeah c'mon! You're perfect for this gig!" The set is true ambient, that is, it's entirely without beat or rhythm. The 'ambient' tag is much-abused of late, and this mixtape presents true ambient music in all its' droning, shining glory; the perfect cure for dance music overdose.

I was going to say "For true ambient fans only", but are some of you beat-freaks may not be fully acquainted with the genre, and this is a great place to start.  True ambient music is capable of sustaining different levels of attention. One might fully attend to listening, or just as easily study, while enjoying the music. The absence of beats does something to alter the sense of time in the music. The right mind-set is essential to the full ambient experience. I urge you to listen to it for the first time as I did; I downloaded, and listened as I was making an hour-long commute, without skimming or skipping.  The set accumulates weight as it builds toward a stunning climax. So don't be in a hurry, and open yourself to beauty without the beat.

Download: WILD by Nomadic Firs

The guitar driven psych-pop songs of Tennessee based musician Ryan Boos' Nomadic Firs are given full de-rangements by a host of talented remix artists. I don't know whether this is just a collection of great (largely) unknown remixers, or  this material just lends itself to remixing really well, but in either case it works wonderfully. The original songs are taken in the right direction; made spacier, accentuating the dreamy aspect of the tunes. There have already been a couple of impressive tracks to break out from this collection, namely Odesza's "Cover Bombs" and Mountain Range's take on "Get The Map", but the surprising thing is the uniformly excellent quality of the other tracks. This is a very well curated collection, and it's free. I consider this an essential download.

If you missed the excellent original, self titled Nomadic Firs album you can check it out here.

Moon Pollen // Shine

The name of this was a dead give-away. How could something named “Moon Pollen Shine” be anything but perfect summertime chillwave? This beautiful track, which will fit nicely on trip-to-the-beach mixtapes, is a fully developed song with the rare feature of a brief but sublime guitar solo. It will have you feeling like it’s summer 2010 again. Moon Pollen is a shoegaze / dreamwave singer and songwriter based in Argentina who has been posting to Soundcloud for six months or so but this is the first track he’s made available for download. A debut worth waiting for. Moon Pollen - Shine (Radio edit) by Moon Pollen
